Fireplaces vs. Inserts vs. Stoves: What Should I Choose for My Home?
So, you’re looking to install a new home heating appliance. But with so many options on the market, you’re just not sure which one is the best choice for you. Fortunately, you’ve come to the right place.
Here at Ozark Stove & Chimney, we’re your local home heating experts, and we’d be happy to help walk you through your options so you can make the most informed decision. Here are the biggest things to consider about each fire-hosting appliance.
Fireplace Pros and Cons
Pros:
- They’re versatile. With options to burn either gas or wood fuel, fireplaces are a traditional aesthetic choice that adds to the ambiance of any home.
- They add value to your home. No matter if they’re traditional masonry or modern prefabricated, homes with fireplaces and chimney systems add a level of comfort that is unmatched by any other heating appliance.
- They provide excellent radiant heat. Unlike the fireplace of old, modern day fireplaces create a radiant heat that draws people in to get cozy by the fire.
Cons:
- They’re less efficient than other models. One of the biggest drawbacks to fireplace systems is that a lot of their produced heat is lost up the chimney, making them not-the-most efficient for use as a heat source.
- They either burn fossil fuel or pollute the air with toxins. No matter the fuel you choose to burn in a fireplace, there are disadvantages. Gas burns more cleanly, but raises your carbon footprint while wood is a renewable resource, but also produces pollutants that can negatively impact those with breathing problems.
Fireplace Insert Pros and Cons
Pros:
- They burn cleaner. Due to their design, insert models provide a much cleaner burn with no chance of smoke entering the living space because everything is contained within the firebox.
- They’re more efficient. Another benefit of their design is increased efficiency. Unlike traditional fireplaces where a great deal of heat is lost out the open front and up the chimney, the self-contained nature of inserts means that the heat they produce actually warms your space.
- They’re easy to install. Of all the different heating appliances, inserts are some of the easiest for professionals to install. This means that you don’t have to block out hours or days of your week to schedule a lengthy installation process.
Cons:
- They’re a higher upfront investment. Inserts are a bit more of an investment on the front end just because of the way they are installed into your existing fireplace/chimney structure. However, once they’re installed and operational, because they’re that much more efficient, you’ll be saving on fuel.
- They’re not as “classic.” For as cost-efficient and clean-burning as they are, they’re not quite the same as sitting in front of an open fireplace.
Free-Standing Stove Pros and Cons
Pros:
- They provide the greatest volume of heat. Designed for maximal heat production and minimal loss, stoves are the most efficient appliance among the three. In fact, stoves are often used to heat entire rooms and sometimes even whole homes.
- They have a range of fuel options. Stoves are versatile in terms of what source you choose to fuel them with. You can choose between wood, pellet, and gas, in order to best align with your personal preferences – without it affecting the heat production.
- They can be installed just about anywhere. Because they are freestanding, stoves can be installed pretty much wherever you want. As long as they are able to vent the created exhaust, they aren’t confined to spaces where only a fireplace or an insert could go.
Cons:
- They take up more space. Inserts and fireplaces are typically installed directly into a wall, which means that they take up much less floor space. Stoves, however, are free-standing and need to be placed intentionally away from the wall, so they require a bit more room.
- They are a bigger investment on the front end. Perhaps the biggest investment option among the three, stoves can be a larger financial commitment when it comes to purchase and installation. Yet, because they are also the most efficient, you’ll likely make up those investment costs in the savings on fuel costs.

What Are the Pros & Cons of Heating with Wood?
So, you’ve decided what type of appliance you want – great! Unfortunately, the decision-making isn’t done yet. You’ll also want to figure out which type of fuel you’d like to burn.
Now, for some, this is no question – wood is the only way to go. If you fall into this category, we can’t say we blame you. Burning wood is definitely the more classic approach, inviting all those lovely smells and sounds into your living space. And if you’re able to season and store your own logs, then even better!
But there are always cons, too. In general, one of the largest drawbacks to heating with wood is the smoke and harmful particles produced during combustion. However, while there is no way for the wood smoke to ever be pollutant-, chemical-, and particle-free, following Environmental Protection Association (EPA) guidelines and suggestions ensures that you are doing your part to reduce overall carbon emissions.
In addition to that, there’s more work involved in hauling wood, storing it (if you season your own), building fires, maintaining them, and then dealing with a messy ash pile afterward. That said, we hesitate to refer to this as a con because, while it may seem like a nightmare to some, others find this process a fulfilling (even fun) piece of the whole wood-burning fire experience.
Are Gas Log Fireplaces Worth it?
We certainly think so – as do countless homeowners throughout the Southwest Missouri and Northwest Arkansas area. They’re versatile, customizable, clean-burning, and generally safer than their traditional wood-burning counterparts.
Are we saying that they’re intrinsically better than fireplaces that burn wood? Absolutely not. It all comes down to what you’re looking for in a fireplace.
If you cherish the thought of gathering kindling and coaxing a crackling fire to life, a gas fireplace might not be the option for you. If, however, you want that cozy, warm ambiance of a home fire without all the mess and work involved with obtaining the wood, stoking the fire, cleaning out the soot/ash/creosote, etc., then a gas log fireplace is an excellent option.
When it comes to energy efficiency and widespread heat production, gas logs are the way to go. With numerous different options, gas fireplaces tend to be more customizable both in terms of appearance and physical location of where they could be installed. In terms of ease and convenience, gas log fireplaces are hard to beat.
